This weeks Green Friday is another pretty easy way to reduce energy usage.
And, it is something we can all relate to.
Green Friday Tip#2
Do not pre-rinse your dishes before placing them in the dishwasher.
Yes, I know, this totally goes against everything I was taught growing up. But, you read correctly.
Apparently rinsing dishes is a complete waste of time, energy, money and water. Just imagine how much of all these precious resources we could all save by avoiding this useless step.
I don't know about you guys, but you don't have to tell me twice.
It is recommended, however, to scrape chunks of food and bones into the trash.
What about old dishwashers?
Well, according to website found here, "People with any age dishwasher can feel comfortable knowing they don't need to pre-wash dishes before washing them in the dishwasher."
Obviously, pots and pans with burnt on grease and food may require some soaking and scrubbing prior to washing, but for the basics (cups, plates, silverware) rinsing is not required.
According to the same website, "An energy-efficient dishwasher uses up to 5 gallons of water to wash an entire load of dishes. Washing dishes by hand while letting the water run can use up to 27 gallons."
Furthermore, "You use more electricity rinsing dishes off in the sink than the dishwasher uses to wash the whole load."
So, give it a go. See what happens.
