time to say farewell...

It is time for me to say goodbye to this blog.
Since being back in the US and having a baby, travel has moved to the bottom of my priority list (although it won't be that way forever!).
I have loved my time on this space and have loved sharing my travels and adventures with all of you, but it's time for me to move on.

So, I started a new blog.
I needed a fresh start.
This new blog will center around my life as a mom, and while it won't be all about motherhood, that will certainly be the source of inspiration.
Since having a baby, my whole world has changed.

So, I hope you'll hop over and follow along,
but if I don't see you again, the adventure was fun while it lasted!
Thanks for following Lost&Found!

baby-wearing favorites

When Octavian was born, I had hoped he would love baby-wearing.
Thankfully, he did.  And without convincing.
When he was a newborn we wrapped him in the moby wrap and the happy wrap (the happy wrap was our favorite).
Baby-wearing saved us in the nap department those first few months when I had no idea how to get him to sleep in a horizontal position.  He slept and I was able to get things done around the house, run errands that didn't involve 45 minute car rides around the block, use the bathroom, etc.

Thanksgiving.  Little man was just 3 weeks and slept through the whole dinner.

But, when he was around 4 months, I knew I needed to find a different way to wear and accommodate my growing, and much more curious, baby.
I knew the Ergo baby carrier was popular throughout the baby-wearing community, but the one I had my eye on was over $100 and a bit out of my budget.  Plus, I wanted something a bit more flexible so that Octavian didn't have only two wearing options- facing toward me or facing out.
So, I started searching for baby ring slings.
For me, a sling made the most sense.  I love holding Octavian on my hip.  He can look out and see all the activity around him, or snuggle up against me if he gets tired and needs a break.
But, at 8 months old, he is way too heavy to carry him around all the time without support.

After spending some time shopping around on Etsy (my favorite), I found the shop TinyRoos.
Handmade by a baby-wearing mama, I loved the look of her ring slings.
I ordered the blue peacock color and it's perfect.  Every time I leave the house I get comments on how lovely the color is, and how well it matches my blue-eyed little man.
It takes two seconds to get Octavian in-and-out and, most importantly, he loves it!
It came in the mail just before our family trip to Hawaii, and it made traveling so easy as we navigated the airport, waited for our rental car and took many many walks to the beach- not to mention the more than two hours he spent in the sling while we were at a friends wedding.
My favorite part of ring slings is how comfortable they are. Sometimes I forget i'm carrying around a 20 pound baby on my body.

So, tell me, do you baby wear?  What carrier is your favorite?

7 Month Update (3 weeks late)

Weight and Height:
18 pounds, 9 ounces
26 1/4 inches long

Weight gain is still slow and steady and lands him in the 59th percentile for his age group.  And, according to our pediatrician, he is in the 17th percentile for height.  I think that he is a little taller than what he was measured to be, but the nurse that always measures him isn't the nicest person in the world, so I always wimp out on asking her to measure again.

In the beginning of the month we were putting him down around 7pm and he was waking up between 530-630am (usually closer to 530am).  He was also struggling to make it to 7pm bed time.  It was suggested that I try putting him down closer to 630pm to see if that would get him more sleep (and maybe even get him to sleep in a little later).  Well, this little experiment failed.  By the middle of the month he was starting to wake up for the day between 445-515am.
I would always go in and nurse him and hope that he would fall back to sleep.  On a few rare occasions, he fell back to sleep for 30 minutes or so.  Most morning he would roll around in his crib, chat with his lovie elephant and suck on his thumb.  He would work so hard to go back to sleep.  Unless he started to cry, I would let him hang out and try to fall back to sleep until 6am.  I didn't want him to think that 5am was time to get up- or that that's when the sun rises.
I still nursed him at least once during the night (rarely twice).  Although, he did sleep through the night completely on 5.16.14!  I missed our middle-of-the-night snuggles, and I was up every hour wondering when he was going to wake up, but it was nice to not have to get out of bed.

Naps this month have improved so much!  He has started taking an average of 3 naps per day (rarely 4), usually 35-90 minutes long.  Most days he does give us one longer nap which is pretty exciting after so many months of short and very frequent naps.

Bedtime Routine:
Our routine has stayed the same this month except for one small difference- since he is so mobile these days, he gets to spend very little of his naked time on our bed, and instead spends more time in his pack n play.
So, it still goes a little something like this:
get naked... play naked in pack n play or on bed while I fold laundry and run around the house getting everything ready... bath or sponge bath... singing, massage, vitamin drops (his favorite), and jammies... nurse... burp... kisses and bed.
He thrives on this routine, thank goodness!

Nursing was a bit of a struggle this month.  I shed many tears because my sweet boy decided it is way more fun to play than it is to suck on a boob.  We went from a very happy nursing "schedule" of 7 times per 24 hours, to a struggle of 4-5 times per day.  I never suspected that he wanted to wean, I just think I want him to nurse more than he wants or needs to at this point.
Some days getting him to nurse more often is no problem, but other days it's impossible.  By the end of the month I decided I need to chill out and trust that if he's hungry, he'll let me know.
Also, he's gotten too big for the scale we have.  Prior to this point I knew that I could always weigh him if I suspected he wasn't eating enough.  Now, I have no idea.  Making sure he is nursing enough has been an issue of mine since day one, and since he's never taken to bottles, I have never really had a great idea of what he is eating.  For some reason, this freaks me out.

Aside from nursing, little man has tried some new solids!
So far he's eaten:
banana, egg yoke, prunes, sweet potato, peas, green beans, and apple sauce
I only offer solids 1-2 times per day and plan to take solids very slow.  I also always offer a sippy cup with frozen breastmilk.

Unfortunately, it has taken me over 3 weeks to start this post, and sadly, I have forgotten if we had any type of schedule.  Yes, this is how fast things change around here!
I offer the boob every couple hours and make sure he gets a nap when he needs one, so I suppose we never really had a set schedule.

New Skills:
He is rolling like crazy!  And, as long as he isn't too tired he can sit up for long stretches of time unassisted.  I do, however, always make sure that someone is sitting behind him, or there is a soft pillow for him to fall on- he still likes to fling himself backwards.
He has also really started to babble!  He started saying ma-ma and ba-ba on 5.26.14 and hasn't stopped since!  I actually think it may be part of the cause of his early wake-ups!  He loves to chat away.    He also loves to scream!  I think it's hilarious and often have screaming "conversations" with him.

He LOVES his exercauser!  It is his favorite time of day.  I try to limit how much time he spends in it, but he has so much fun I can't help but let him play in there a couple times per day- it also allows me to do dishes and throw in some laundry!
This boy love love loves peek-a-boo! Oh my goodness, he goes crazy for it!
He loves his crib!
I bought this plush stackable toy from Ikea and it's his favorite!
Cats and dogs are his favorite!!!
TAGS!  Oh my goodness, if something has a tag on it, he will find it and it will be in his mouth!
He also loves sucking his thumb.  His favorite is when he can get a tag and his thumb in his mouth!
Errands.  He's the best company :)

He hates when I wipe his face after I feed him solids.  Drives him mad.
Although he loves bathtime, he hates when I wash his hair.

Month Highlights:
He went in the pool for the first time!  I think he is still getting used to the idea of a giant swimming pool, but he seems to enjoy himself.  He also loves trying to taste the pool water which I am not ok with and try to distract him from as much as possible.
We started going on lots of walks and runs together down by the river.  He just sits back and enjoys the ride- most of the time.

This month we ventured down to Santa Monica to visit my family.  We left after bedtime routine and he slept the entire way!  We arrived at 2am and he was up at 5am!  This Mama was not thrilled about 2 hours of sleep.  Overall, he did really well.  He was happy and loved all the attention from my family.  He did well going to sleep in the pack n play for naps.  However, he did not sleep well in the pack n play our first full night there.  Since I was sleeping right next to him, I didn't sleep more than and hour or so since I was thrashing around the entire night.  He was also up at 5am screaming and only went back to sleep when I put him on my chest.  Since I was running on a few hours of sleep, we decided to leave a day early.  He and I both needed a good night sleep.  We drove back the third night, and thankfully he slept the entire way once again.
Things I learned?  My child loves sleeping in his carseat, but not his pack n play.  He started out great in the pack n play, but with each sleep he became more irritable when I put him in it.  Next visit we may need to rent a crib.  We will also have to drive during the day, OR fly, since I can't function properly on several nights of just 2 hours of sleep.

Speaking of pack n play, he no longer naps at other peoples' homes.  No more full afternoons at Grandma's house.  He will only sleep and nap in the car, in his stroller or in his crib (and on my chest if I rock him).  I love that he sleeps so well at home, but oh man!  It makes going out impossible sometimes.

He got his 6 month shots!  I was expecting him to have a couple rough days, but it was like nothing had happened.  He took a 3 hour nap once we got home, but that was it!

photo dump of my favorite baby and Happy Monday!

It's Monday!
For me, Monday feels like every other day.  No matter what day of the week it may be, I am still in bed by 9pm and usually awake by 6am.
But, Monday still indicates the start of a new week.
(actually, that would be Sunday, but Monday always felt more appropriate)

Little man struggled with teething a few days last week (but, still nothing to show for all the fussing) and a serious lack of appetite.
I was a bit of a wreck trying to get him to nurse.
Strangely, he has been sleeping great!  Nearly 12 hours at night and his first night sleeping completely through the night with no feedings.  His naps are even getting better.

He is getting cuter by the day and more and more vocal!
This baby likes to talk (and scream).

My goal for the week is to get out jogging with him at least a few times.
Such a simple goal, and something I always feel great about once I'm finished-
but, getting out the door is always so much work.
Plus, it's been pretty warm up in northern California, so I'll have to get moving early.

Any mama's out there have any other recommendations for exercises with a baby- or exercise at home?
I am back to my pre-pregnancy weight, but I have no muscle and feel weak.
I also eat like it's my job and need something to burn that extra energy.

Speaking of food-
I spiralized zucchini last night.  We ate it with tomato pasta sauce with mushroom, onion and ground turkey (and, of course, loads of cheese).
I am in love.
So much better than real pasta noodles!!!
If I can get my act together, i'll post the recipe.  It really is that good.  And, I didn't feel stuffed afterwards.

I have also been working on my Around the World travel board on Pinterest and actually trying to do it in order by location.
pro- I'm learning my geography.
con- my travel bucket list basically includes every country in the World and has really made me itch to travel again.

I can't complain, however- we will be traveling with the babe to Hawaii in July for 6 nights.
I will need some tips and advice on how to make this little adventure a success with an 8 month old-
our trip to southern California last week left me sleepless for three nights and brought back the horror of those newborn days.

Side note- this may be my new favorite blog.  Not sure how "new" it is, but it's new to me and she makes me laugh.

Well, that's all the random I have for this morning!
I hope you all have a fantastic Monday!

On Octavian-
"Ladies Love Me" tee- finomenon kids
Chevron leggings- little hip squeaks

On Me-
White tee- Victoria Secret (what's your favorite white tee???)
Boyfriend Jeans- Old Navy
Sandals- Birkenstock (omg, I loveeee)

Happy Mother's Day

Just stopping in real quick to wish all Mama's out there a

  Happy Mother's Day!

This guy makes being a Mom the best gift I could ever ask for.
He is my everything

But, being a Mom is not always easy.
It is demanding and exhausting and often really really messy.
I didn't know this a year ago, but I know this now.

We are molding the future, after all.

So Mama's, keep molding.
You're doing a great job!

6 month update

My sweet boy turned 6 months on Sunday.
It is very bittersweet.

17 pounds 8 ounces
I noticed at the beginning of the month that he wasn't gaining weight (we have a scale because I am crazy when it comes to feeding this guy).  After two weeks without gaining any weight I was very concerned.  He was eating, but whenever I tried to offer more, he refused.  At this point there is no forcing this kid to eat.  I went to the pediatrician and found out he lost an ounce in the week since we were there last.  The doctor recommended that we start him on cereals.  I ignored this suggestion and thankfully Octavian packed on almost a pound the last two weeks of the month!

Not sure exactly.  At our doctors appointment a few weeks ago he was 25 3/4 inches.  We suspect he may have grown since then since all of his clothes are a little more snug and much shorter on his perfectly chubby legs.

Overall sleep has been pretty great this month.  Since sleep training (which took like 2 nights and very little tears, thank goodness) he falls asleep completely on his own.  No sleep associations at all- unless you count the sleep sac and little elephant lovie that has become his new bff.
This month he would fall asleep between 630/730pm and wake up between 5/630am.  At the end of the month he was consistently falling asleep around 7pm and waking up between 530/6am.  The 5am wake ups kill me, and I don't want him to get in the habit of starting his day that early, so my general rule is, unless he is screaming crying, I let him hang out with mr. elephant until 6am.  I have never had to go in before 6am once this little rule was established.  Sometimes i'm really lucky and he'll go back to sleep for 30 minutes.
He nurses once (sometimes twice) in the middle of the night, and that makes me really happy.  I do not see the need in him going 11+ hours without food- I don't even go that long.  So, i'm happy to nurse once or twice in the middle of the night as long as he needs me.  And, now that I just plop him on the boob, burp and put him back in his crib, it's a piece of cake (although I do miss our nighttime snuggles sometimes).
Naps...oh naps.  Naps have good days and naps have bad days.  At the end of the month we had a couple days where he took at least one hour+ nap in the day which was shocking and amazing.  Most days, however, he naps 4 times, lasting anywhere from 25-45 minutes.  I remember a couple months ago complaining about the consistent 45 min nap.  Well, now I am thrilled when he snoozes that long- those 25 minute naps are killer.  I am patiently waiting for the day that he drops a nap and they last a little longer, but i'm starting to get discouraged that that will ever happen consistently (and therefore don't plan on having any kind of social life for at least another 6 months).

Bedtime Routine-
We have a very set bedtime routine.  About 45 minutes before I want him to be in bed asleep we start with "nakie time".  This child loves to be naked, so we let him play on our bed for 15-25 minutes naked each night. It also lets his tush dry out on the rare occasion that he has a little diaper rash.  Daddy usually plays with him while I run around and get everything ready for bed.  This is usually the time that I fold laundry too- it allows me to do two things at once :)
About twice a week I'll take a bath with him, but since there are some pretty serious water shortages in Northern California we keep them limited.  All the other nights I give him a little sponge bath while I sing our bedtime song.
Then I move him to his changing table where I continue to sing and give him a little massage with lotion and put his jammies on.  We nurse, I burp him, put him in his sleep sac, give him a kiss, turn on his sound machine and give him his space to fall asleep.
For naps I just read him a book or two, put him in his sleep sac, give him a kiss and leave the room.  He really loves bedtime routine.

Despite my best efforts, little man only wants to nurse 6-7 times per day.  If I put him on the boob any more than that and he is not a happy camper.  Some days he nurses more than other days and I try really hard not to stress on those days that he isn't super hungry.  When he does nurse he takes anywhere between 3-8 ounces at a time.

Although we were planning on waiting until at least 6 months to introduce solids, I decided I would puree some tasty goodies together to see if he would eat.  He has been showing interest in our food the past couple months and frequently grabs what we have out of our hand.
We started with avocado mixed with breastmilk.  As mentioned in the previous post- he loved it!  We have also offered sweet peas, sweet potato and oatmeal.  He's decided he likes avocado.
....only avocado.

ahhh, the elusive schedule.  I thought we had a bit of a schedule going in the beginning of the month.  He would nap 4 times per day and I would feed him 7 times in 24 hours.  It was a bit of a sleep, eat, play schedule.  Wellll, he has since decided that isn't working anymore.  Now, our schedule is all over the map.  I consistently get him out of his crib around 630am (give or take 15 min) and he will take his first nap approximately two hours after (give or take 15 minutes), but that's about the only schedule we have.  Up until a week ago, he would always nurse when he woke up in the morning, but now, not so much.  Depending on when and how much he ate in the middle of the night will determine if he eats when he wakes up.  His first nap is just as unpredictable.  It lasts anywhere from 25-75 minutes.
I am trying to be more flexible with the whole schedule thing.  I've tried to get a consistent schedule going, but it's never lasted or worked in his benefit, and it just stresses me out.  He is still little and I'm hoping that as he gets older he'll figure out the nap thing a bit more.  Although we don't have a set schedule, I try to keep his bedtime and morning wake-up happen within the same hour each day.

New Skills:
The biggest achievement this month was rolling from back to belly!  Suddenly one week he discovered how much he loved rolling and sleeping on his side.  Since he's never been a big fan of tummy time I didn't think he would be self motivated to complete the roll onto his belly.  Out of nowhere a couple weeks later I looked over at him as he was playing on his activity mat and saw him roll over!  I was so proud!  I think he was pretty proud of himself too which makes me really happy.
He has also fallen in love with the little boy in the mirror!  Suddenly this month he has started reacting to his reflection in the mirror.  He gets so excited whenever we walk past the mirror- I always have to stop and let him chat with himself for a minute or two.
He is sitting for longer and longer.  He still flings himself backwards when he gets super excited, but he can sit unaided for at least a minute or two if he's not being lazy.  This both excites me and makes me really scared.  It's only a matter of time before he is crawling around.
He has been using his feet as a second set of hands.  He loves to pick up toys with his feet and bring them to his hands or straight to his mouth.

his reflection
tickle time!
mommy kisses
naked time
the monkeys that hang from his pack n play...
he actually loves all his toys especially mr. ducky, sir klaus, yellow ball thing that he can chew on and his exersaucer

having his clothes and diaper changed (about 3/4 of the time)
being bored- he needs constant entertainment
when I burp him in sitting position

Month Highlights:
He had his first Easter!  Although we don't celebrate with Church, we did get together with family for a lovely brunch.  He received his first Easter basket- it was filled with new toys, new books, a new sleep sac and Sir Klaus!
Octavian saw the doctor twice this month!  The first time was because he wasn't gaining weight.  Although our doctor recommended we start him on rice cereal, I disagreed and stuck with breastmilk.  Thankfully he gained a pound in the second half of the month!  His second doctor visit was due to a very mild case of croup.  Thankfully it didn't affect sleep and was gone within a couple days.
He started solids!
We survived Wonder Week leap 5!!!  Holy smokes I have never seen such a cranky baby- at least not from him.  For about a week Octavian would be happy and laughing one minute, and crying the next.  He was always super miserable after his last nap before bed time.  It took some serious teamwork between Daddy and I to get through those rough periods.

He is still in awe with his hands.  Sometimes I catch him just staring at his fingers like they are the coolest thing since sliced bread.  I can't blame him, hands are pretty awesome.

He has started to suck his thumb- frequently.  I'm not sure if it's because he is teething or what, but up until now he would only suck his thumb when he was tired.

Speaking of teeth, no pearly whites to show for yet.  They're comin' though, I can feel it (or see that he can feel it).

I can't carry him around as much anymore since he's getting to big and I'm starting to develop some serious back pain.  I'm not liking this and neither is he.  In fact, it's the worst timing ever since he has been a bit more clingy than usual lately.

I miss him after he goes to sleep.  Some nights I'm tempted to go in and watch him sleep, but he's such a light sleeper and I would feel awful if I woke him.  Thank goodness I have a video monitor- best invention EVER.

My sweet boy,
if only you knew how much joy you bring to my life.  Every time I see your wide smile and chubby cheeks I just want to grab hold of you and never let you go- or just melt into a puddle of mush on the floor because my overwhelming love for you is so strong that I find myself crying for no reason at all when I look into your eyes.  It is hard for me to believe that you are 6 months old.  In just a few short months you  will be crawling all over the place- although I know the day will come for you to assert your independence, you will always be my little boy.  I love watching you grow into such a happy and smart little person.  Each day a little more of your personality shines through.  You are no longer a quiet little baby- you have strong likes and dislikes and I love this about you.  Every night before I put you back to sleep, I give you a little squeeze, smell your sweet baby smell, and try to soak in as much of you as possible.  You make me so happy and I am so lucky to be your Mom.
